Some familiar faces are in new roles at Lake Forest Academy as the private school now has a permanent head of school along with an interim athletic director, and a new hockey coach.

LFA released a statement in July that Tom Johnson, who served as interim head of school in 2024-25, was named for the job on a permanent basis. Later in the summer, the school announced Kyle Koncz as the interim athletic director with Tom Boudreau hired as the boys prep hockey head coach. These changes occurred following the departure of longtime athletic director Darrin Madeley.

Prior to being tabbed as Head of School, Johnson was LFA’s dean of faculty from 2017-2024 plus being a member of history and social sciences department. He also coached girls basketball and boys swimming.

“I came to Lake Forest Academy in 2017 because I was attracted to the talented student body, the dedicated faculty and staff, the global makeup of the school, and the close community that exists here,” Johnson said in a statement. “My affection for LFA has grown with each successive year, and I am proud to call this school home for me and my family. LFA has built an outstanding reputation in the boarding school world, and it has been a great privilege to get to know the school’s alumni and families, and hear each of their stories of how the school has transformed their lives. I am honored to lead the school into its next phase as a hallmark of global education, and extremely grateful for this opportunity.”

LFA spokesman Greg Greenwell said Johnson was selected from a group of four finalists.

Johnson served as interim head of school last year after the announcement that Chris Tennyson was no longer in that position after two years.

Tennyson began working at LFA in 1999 serving in several positions before being promoted to head of school in 2022. He taught calculus at LFA in 2024-25, but left the school over the summer upon being named director of a private school in Oakton, VA.

When reached for comment, Tennyson declined to comment.

Meanwhile, LFA’s athletic department will have a new look this year with Koncz named as interim athletic director and Boudreau as the boys prep hockey coach. A 12-year LFA veteran Koncz has been the school’s assistant athletic director and boys basketball coach.

Greenwell said Boudreau is a 2001 LFA graduate as he takes over coaching duties.

Madeley, who was the school’s hockey coach since 2005 and named athletic director in 2011, had filled both roles. Greenwell did not comment on Madeley’s departure citing privacy issues.

Madeley did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

The school hopes to have a permanent athletic director in place for the 2026-27 school year, Greenwell added.

There are 452 students enrolled at LFA this year, Greenwell said.
