At about 4 p.m. Saturday, multiple law enforcement agencies responded to an incident in the 1200 block of East Wilson Street in Batavia, the release stated. The response included officers from the Batavia Police Department, who arrived on the scene first, and officers from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, officials said.
Preliminary investigative findings indicate that the 39-year-old man was armed with a firearm and fired at officers, according to the release. Law enforcement officers also discharged their weapons during the incident, officials said.
It has not yet been determined whether any of the rounds fired by law enforcement struck the man or contributed to his death, according to the release.
The incident is being investigated by the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force. After the investigation’s completion, the task force will turn all reports over to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office for an independent review of the facts, officials said.
Additional information on the incident will be released as it becomes available, officials said late Sunday morning.
