Hinsdale resident Sara Held immersed herself in music for two weeks this summer, studying at Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Door County, Wisconsin.
The Hinsdale Middle School student was among 57 musicians from throughout the United States to study at the prestigious academy. Its mission is “to provide intensive, performance-based instruction to promising musicians by immersing them in a professional, mentoring environment,” a news release shared.
Held took part in the symphony session, honing technical skills and learning about what it means to be a professional musician. Students in this session performed six concerts with their teachers in front of a paying audience.

Cosmetology faculty member Donita Mitchell said stepping into the facility is similar to walking into a high-end barbershop or salon. “It’s the real deal,” she said via a media release.
There’s another way the new space mirrors that experience too: The public can make appointments for an assortment of services. Students will gain hands-on job training as well as learn through textbooks and lectures. Barber and cosmetology certificates require 50 credit hours, or 1,500 clock hours mandated by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. After completing a certificate, students can move on to a license from the state.
Barber faculty and students will give free back-to-school haircuts from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 17 at Re’Lux Hair Studio in Maywood. Learn more about the program at triton.edu.
