Based on the preliminary investigation, the incident, which happened at about 1:55 p.m., is believed to be an accident, according to a statement from Oswego Police Chief Jason Bastin.
“However, we are thoroughly reviewing all available evidence, including witness statements and surveillance video, to determine exactly what occurred,” Bastin said in the statement.
Of those injured, eight people including the driver of the vehicle were transported to the hospital, police said. The other people injured were treated at the scene and released.
Oswego Fire Protection District Chief Joshua Flanders at a press conference Wednesday said that three of those taken to the hospital had serious injuries, not including the boy who was killed.
Police said the driver was a 50-year-old woman, who was the only occupant of the vehicle that crashed into the restaurant.
In his statement, Bastin said that support services are being made available, and police are coordinating closely with victim assistance resources for those impacted by the crash.
“On behalf of the police and fire department we extend our deepest condolences to the family during this devastating time,” Bastin said in the statement about the family of the 2-year-old who died during the incident.
