Elgin firefighters rescued a person from the roof of a house engulfed in fire early Monday morning, officials said.

Firefighters responding to multiple 911 calls arrived at a two-story home in the 400 block of Jay Street about 4:30 a.m. to find flames on the front porch and spreading into the first and second floors, a fire department news release said.

The resident was safely assisted off the roof without injuries by Elgin police officers, but a neighbor and a firefighter were transported to a local hospital for medical attention. The latter was experiencing heart palpitations and was later released. No additional information on the neighbor was released.

The was significantly damaged by fire, smoke and heat; the cause remains under investigation.
