Firefighters from the Glenview Fire Department and eight other departments battled fire and heavy smoke conditions Saturday, July 5, to bring a house fire under control. Two dogs were rescued but died of smoke inhalation, according to the Glenview Fire Department.
The department said the first Glenview fire engine arrived at the home, on the 1200 block of Roosevelt Avenue, at 12:35 p.m. and reported smoke coming from the front door, windows, and roof.
After Battalion 6 upgraded the response to a confirmed fire, firefighters learned from neighbors that the house was unoccupied except for two dogs, according to a news release from the village. Firefighters were able to recover the dogs, but they died due to smoke inhalation. No civilians or firefighters were injured during the incident.
Fire companies encountered fire and heavy smoke conditions on the first and second floors, according to the department.
“Due to the building construction, fire companies had to perform extensive overhaul to expose hot spots and extinguish them,” the news release said. “Remaining fire companies performed ventilation of super-heated toxic gases, utility stabilization, and salvage of occupants’ valuables.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the village said. The home was uninhabitable due to the fire, heat, and smoke damage it sustained.
Damage estimates were not immediately available.
Morton Grove, Skokie, Niles, Northfield, North Maine, Buffalo Grove, Wilmette, and Des Plaines fire departments assisted the Glenview Fire Department.
Five engines, two trucks, one squad, three ambulances, and three battalion chiefs assisted in fighting the fire.
