A woman, 39, died in an apartment fire at a four-story complex on Aurora’s East Side Monday afternoon, according to a news release from the Aurora Fire Department.

At around 2:15 p.m. on June 30, the fire department responded to a fire alarm at an apartment complex on the 900 block of North Avenue in Aurora, the release said.

With a total of 12 personnel, the responding units arrived to find residents of the complex evacuating and smoke reported on the second floor, according to the release. Firefighters located an apartment on the west end of the building filled with smoke and moderate heat, and found a small fire in the bedroom that was quickly put out, officials said.

Responding firefighters found a woman dead inside the unit, the release said. She was the only occupant of the apartment. No other injuries were reported, and the unit was deemed uninhabitable, according to the release.

The Aurora Fire Department and Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office are continuing to investigate the fire, the release noted. At this point, they believe the fire to have been accidental, the release said.
