Due to hiccups with a transition to updated technology, Maine Township officials announced that mailing of county tax bills is expected to be delayed about a month.
“When Cook County’s second installment property tax bills are sent on time, tax bills hit mailboxes in late June and are due around August 1. This year, however, the mailing and due dates for tax bills will be delayed by at least one month,” Maine Township Assessor Susan Krey stated in an electronic message.
Krey said the result is that that second installment tax bills will not be due before Sept. 1 – and the due date could be later.

The assessor explained that for decades, the Cook County agencies involved in preparing property tax bills have used a mainframe computer system that dates back to the 1980s. However, over the past few years, the county has been phasing out the old system.
This year, Krey stated, marks the first year in which the old system will be phased out completely. The tax bills for this year will be calculated fully under the new system. But issues with the final transition to the new system are the reason for the second installment mailing delay.
“Although we are experiencing growing pains with the new system this year, I am hopeful that the system will make it easier to issue tax bills on time in future years,” Krey said.
