A young woman was stabbed and critically wounded Tuesday night in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, according to Chicago police.

The victim, 27, was involved in a physical altercation with aperson in the 7800 block of South Sangamon Street about 6:30 p.m. when the attacker grabbed a sharp object and stabbed the woman in the abdomen, police said.

She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, officials said.

Police could not immediately say whether anyone was in custody as Calumet Area detectives continued their investigation.
