A person of interest has been identified in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident where an elderly male pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV early Thursday morning while crossing a street in Morton Grove, according to police.

In a news release, police say that officers responded at around 7:30 a.m. Thursday to the 6700 block of Beckwith Street on a call of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the man as Jonathan Friedman, 74, of the 6600 block of Foster St. in Morton Grove.

According to the release, Friedman was crossing the street at Beckwith and Neenah Avenue when he was hit by a tan Chevy Equinox. The driver of the SUV fled the scene, but his vehicle was located “in the vicinity with no driver present.”

Friedman was transported by ambulance to Lutheran General Hospital in nearby Park Ridge. He was pronounced dead about an hour later, the release states.

About three hours after the initial call to the scene, Morton Grove police announced that a person of interest had been identified.

No information was provided about the individual, and it was not immediately clear if they were in police custody.
