A Near West Side man was charged Wednesday in the stabbing death of a 64-year-old man in the United Center neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Shortly after 7:45 a.m. Monday, the victim was in an alley in the 2400 block of West Gladys Avenue when another man approached and an argument ensued. The man the victim was arguing with pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A person of interest was taken into police custody Monday morning shortly before 11 a.m. in the first block of South Western Avenue, police said.

Wednesday morning, Christian Gardner of the 2400 block of West Jackson Street was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of strong probability death/injury. Gardner also had been issued a warrant for his arrest, police said.

He was scheduled to appear at a detention hearing Wednesday.
