Two women were rescued by Geneva firefighters and police officers on Sunday night after they fell out of their kayaks into the Fox River, according to a news release from the Geneva Fire Department.

At around 10:43 p.m. on Sunday, the fire department was called for a river rescue in Geneva, the release said. Geneva firefighters and police were also notified by Tri-Com Central Dispatch that an individual had heard screaming coming from the Fox River near Bennett Street.

The two women had fallen out of their kayaks into the river near the 800 block of North Bennett Street, the news release said. One was assisted to shore by two Geneva police officers, and a fire department rescue boat along with a police officer rescued the second woman from the river.

Firefighters, paramedics and divers from the St. Charles and Batavia fire departments also assisted with the rescue of the two women.

One of the women was taken to an area hospital, and the second refused medical treatment, the release said. The department said in the release Monday that no further information was available on the two individuals’ conditions.
