A fire on Sunday morning left a two-story home on Aurora’s West Side uninhabitable, according to a press release from the Aurora Fire Department.
At around 11:40 a.m. Sunday, the fire department responded to a house fire on the 1100 block of Garfield Avenue in Aurora, finding smoke coming from the second floor, Tuesday’s news release said.
A resident had escaped through a window onto the front entry roof, and firefighters used a ground ladder to rescue the person, according to the release. Firefighters searched the home and found no one else inside.
The fire, which was located on the first floor of the home, was extinguished in less than 10 minutes, the release said.
The resident who was rescued was assessed for smoke exposure but declined further medical treatment, according to the fire department. He had been asleep when the fire began, but the home’s smoke detectors were working at the time of the fire, the release stated.
The house was deemed uninhabitable, and the resident has made arrangements to stay with family members, according to the release. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
