A Hyde Park man accused of wounding two Provident Hospital staff members with a kitchen knife this week was ordered detained at a hearing Wednesday, court records show.
Nathaniel Price, 36, faces two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and one count of battery for allegedly stabbing a doctor and a physician assistant with a stainless steel kitchen knife after he declined treatment, prosecutors said.
Price had been at the hospital, located in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side, three days earlier to get antibiotics for an infection, prosecutors said. Price and the two alleged victims had agreed on a new treatment for the illness, but Price decided not to go forward with the procedure and became hostile, prosecutors said.
Price allegedly went to the restroom, returned and began “screaming unintelligible things” and attacking the doctor with a small silver knife, prompting the physician assistant to push a rolling desk chair at Price. While the physician assistant was restraining Price against a wall of the treatment room, Price allegedly stabbed him and left him with a shallow puncture wound in the chest.
The doctor had two puncture wounds in the chest and a gaping thigh wound that required treatment at another hospital, prosecutors said.
