Two women were found shot to death and a third critically injured in a South Shore neighborhood alley Tuesday morning, according to Chicago police.
The three were shot in an alley in the 7700 block of South Oglesby Avenue around 4:50 a.m., according to police. All three victims were believed to be between 20 and 30 years old. The two fatalities remained unidentified Tuesday evening.
Police said two of the women were shot in the head and they were pronounced dead at the scene. The third woman was shot in the face and chest, and she was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, according to the Chicago Police Department.
The circumstances of the shooting remained unclear. A few hours after the women were discovered, about a dozen CPD detectives and other police personnel could be seen canvassing the area near the alley’s southern mouth between Oglesby and Crandon avenues.
While gun violence typically ebbs in the winter months, homicides in Chicago are slightly outpacing the rate seen in early 2024. Through Jan. 26, the city had seen 28 killings, according to city data. Mayor Brandon Johnson has said a goal for 2025 is to see the city remain below 500 homicides.
