National Weather Service officials pinpointed through radar Thursday a band of fluffy snow on its way to the Chicagoland area.

Below zero windchills smacked commuters Thursday morning as weather officials expected  temperatures would feel between 10 to 20 degrees below freezing throughout the morning.

Officials initially said there was a limited excessive cold risk Thursday morning for portions of north-central and northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana. Later, in the early afternoon, officials said radar showed a band of white fluffy snow was headed toward the area.

Current conditions at O’Hare International Airport are mostly cloudy at 12 degrees with a windchill of minus 11 degrees, with Midway Airport the same, officials said.

Officials also said a coating of snow was expected Thursday afternoon near U.S. Highway 24 and warned driving conditions might be slippery in that area, but later changed the forecast to include radar information.

Temperatures are expected to warm up to a high of 30 degrees Friday, and 42 degrees Saturday when rain moves into the area.
