The Kane County Health Department recently unveiled a new website that compiles health-related data about Kane County residents from over 30 sources and shares that data, along with analyzation and visualization tools, with the public.

County officials announced the launch of the website — which can be found at KaneHealthAtlas.org — in a news release late last week. It hosts data on topics spanning economic conditions, health outcomes, pollution, behavior, demographics and more, which can be used to create visualizations such as maps, charts and graphs.

“We are thrilled to offer this innovative resource to the public,” Kane County Health Department Executive Director Michael Isaacson said in the news release. “The Kane Health Atlas is designed to help our community better understand and address health challenges by providing the tools needed to visualize and analyze local health data.”

The website can generate maps that show variations in a data set, such as the percentage of the population with diabetes, across a specified area, such as the city of Aurora.

Within that area, data can be broken down by ZIP code, census tract, city limits and more. It can also be filtered based on another data set, such as the percentage of people who said in a survey they did not exercise within the past month.

Using the examples above, the website’s mapping tool shows that census tracts within Aurora where more than 30% of residents said they did not exercise recently generally have higher rates of diabetes than the city’s average.

The maps can then be further customized by highlighting health-related buildings like hospitals or grocery stores within the area or by separating the data based on demographics like race and ethnicity, age and gender.

Individual data sets can also be viewed in-depth, either for the county as a whole or for a specific area like Aurora. The website allows users to compare data sets between different areas, such as the difference in diabetes rates between Aurora and Elgin, or see the change in data over time.

To compare different data sets, the website offers a scatterplot tool, which automatically draws a best-fit line between two data sets. The tool also performs a regression analysis to look at the correlation between the two data sets and give an explanation of its findings along with any shortcomings it finds in the data.

For example, the tool found that, county-wide, rates of diabetes increase with the percentage of people reporting that they did not exercise recently. The relationship was “highly significant” even when holding some variables like income, education and demographics constant, but the analysis was based on a small number of data points so should be taken with caution, the tool said.

The website also features a chatbot that can search for data compiled by the website based on users’ questions.

Officials said in the news release that the website, which is available in 10 different languages, could be a useful tool for a variety of different people and groups within Kane County.

For example, the release said that health professionals could use it to identify trends and allocate resources more effectively. Educators could use the data to teach their students about public health and wellness, while policymakers could use the data to address health disparities and improve community health through informed policies, the release said.

Local nonprofit organizations could also use the website and its data to tailor their programs to meet the specific needs of different groups within Kane County, according to the release.
