First-degree murder charges have been filed against a Wisconsin man accused of shooting a man in Elgin after stealing several mobile phones from him, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said.
Dijon P. Edwards, 25, of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, also was charged with felony counts of armed robbery and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon in connection with the fatal shooting on Oct. 20, 2023.
The victim was identified as 25-year-old Dontrell M. Cortez, of Bloomington, who was shot once with a handgun, the state’s attorney’s office news release said.

Police reports said the incident occurred in the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive. No other details have been released.
Edwards was arrested on a warrant and is being held in the Kane County jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 19.
