The trial of accused Highland Park parade shooter Robert Crimo III won’t happen in February as once scheduled, though Lake County prosecutors said they would like the trial to happen sometime later this year.
At a Wednesday case management conference, Lake County Judge Victoria Rossetti canceled the February trial date she had set last month at Crimo’s insistence. At the Dec. 11 hearing, Crimo told the judge he wanted to discharge his lawyers from the public defender’s office in order to represent himself. Crimo also insisted on a speedy trial.

However, last week Crimo said he wanted to go back to his public defenders, and they were reappointed to represent him on the seven first-degree murder charges and dozens of other felonies in connection to the mass shooting at the July 4, 2022 parade in downtown Highland Park.
Assistant Public Defender Anton Trizna told the judge Wednesday they would like a February 2025 trial date, which had been informally agreed upon before Crimo discharged his lawyers.
However, Assistant State’s Attorney Ben Dillon told the judge that prosecutors had expended considerable effort over the last month in getting ready for the February 2024 trial date. Prosecutors, Dillon said, would now like to try the case in September or October.
The judge ordered both sides back to court on Feb. 21, at which time a trial date set likely will be set.
