An elementary school student, along with ones in middle and high school, emerged from a pool of 220 submissions by “creative young minds across Lake County” to win the contest, clerk’s office officials announced in a news release.
According to the release – which identified the students by their first name only – Annika, a seventh grader at Woodlawn Middle School, in Long Grove, won for the 6th through 8th grade category and is the overall grand prize winner. Woodlawn is one of seven schools in Buffalo Grove-based Kildeer-Countryside School District 96.
“I’ve entered many drawing contests before but I’ve never won. I’m super excited and can’t wait to see my drawing in a sticker!” she stated in the release.
Caleb, who is a fourth grade student at Beach Elementary School, in Round Lake Beach, topped the kindergarten through fifth grade category. The school is one of nine in Round Lake School District 116.
In the 9 to12 high school category, winner Puja Krishnan participated in the contest as part of an advanced placement U.S. government and politics class assignment at Barrington High School, in Barrington, the student’s teacher told Pioneer Press in an email – also providing the teen’s full name.
As part of the class, students complete a civic engagement portfolio, teacher Cary Waxler explained in the email. He said it allows for various “opportunities for students to connect the skills and content we cover in our curriculum to activities that matter most to them.”
Waxler expressed gratitude to the clerk’s office for helping to give students an early entre into the voting process.
The clerk’s office praised the high school senior’s creation as “a design that captured the essence of civic engagement and creativity,” according to the release.
Barrington High School is one of 12 schools in Barrington School District 220.
“We were astounded by the talent and creativity displayed by all the participants in the ‘I Voted’ sticker design contest.” Lake County Clerk Anthony Vega stated in the release. “The dedication and enthusiasm shown by Annika, Caleb, and Puja is exemplary, and their designs truly embody the spirit of our community.”
Officials said the winning designs will be shown and praised across a number of county communications platforms to honor the students’ “talent and contribution.”.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Annika, Caleb, and Puja for their outstanding achievement and thank all the participants for their remarkable submissions!” clerk’s office officials stated in the release.
