Organizers of the event said more than 60 friends and family members attended the event, which featured a birthday cake from Creative Cakes in Tinley Park decorated with a logo of the Green Bay Packers, “which became a hilarious joke among the Chicago Bears fans attending,” said Durham’s daughter, Gigi Glover.

“It was a great event,” Glover said. “Nothing but joy in the place from the servers to the observers in the barroom.”

The Mustang Baseball Academy joined the Evergreen Park Community High School baseball program Wednesday for the third annual Wiffle ball Tournament at the EPCHS Sports Complex, an event that collected items for the EPCHS National Honor Society’s Toys for Tots drive.

Baseball players joined the tournament by donating a toy, and the effort generated about 35 items for the charity drive. It was the first year the youth program joined in the festivities, giving them the chance to play Wiffle ball and eat pizza with their high school counterparts.

Tournament winners were the Mustang team of Jimmy Duggan, Gideon Earley, Patrick Juarez, and the high school team of Rashawn Andrews, Aidan Carr, Billy Duffner, Yarim Garcia and Noah Munoz, according to a news release from the high school.

Andrew High School celebrates diversity

Students at Andrew High School in Tinley park recently were treated to a nibble of plantain, a taste of biryani rice and a slice of kras among other international fare on the menu at the school’s recent Project Diversity Culture Fair.

Students and staff had the opportunity to try foods from different cultures during lunch, including recipes from Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, South Asia and Latin America.

Members of Project Diversity selected the dishes and which restaurants or stores catered them. A few of the delicacies included Frooti, a childhood staple mango drink from South Asia, majanat, a middle eastern baked dough topped with cheese, meat and zatar, as well as lumpia, a Filipino deep fried appetizer filled with ground pork, cabbage and vegetables. In total, 36 dishes were available to sample.

The Culture Fair is a precursor to the main event in February, the Project Diversity show, which exhibits culture through dance and fashion shows.
