Elgin council signs off on Marklund center expansion

The Elgin City Council has approved Marklund Wasmond Center’s plan to expand its campus at Summit Street and Shales Parkway.

The nonprofit center serves adults and children with severe developmental disabilities by providing vocational training and daily living and social skills. It’s adding 20,000 square feet to its existing 43,460-square-foot campus to accommodate three new classrooms and space for 24 more beds for its residential nursing facility.

While some neighbors expressed concern about the size of the addition at a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting in September, there were no comments at last week’s council meeting, where the plan was unanimously approved.

Marklund’s campus includes a nursing facility. It’s one of 10 medical complexes in Illinois for people with developmental disabilities, officials said. It received a certificate of need from the state earlier this year, marking the first expansion of that type of facility in more than 20 years, officials said.
