A man was killed Wednesday afternoon when his 85-year-old mother struck him with her car in the driveway of her unincorporated Elgin home, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

The collision occurred about 1 p.m. when Justine Ackmann was repositioning her 2016 Lincoln SUV outside her Plato Township residence in the 11N200 block of Romeo Drive, the report said. When her son, Steven Ackmann, walked in front of the vehicle, her foot slipped from the brake to the gas pedal, causing the SUV to move forward and strike him.

Steven Ackmann, 63, of the 15N000 Block of French Road, Hampshire, was pronounced dead a short time later, the release said.

“It is unknown how fast the vehicle might have gone prior to and during the crash,” the sheriff’s office release said. “We also have not been notified if safety equipment was used, which included seatbelts (and) it is unknown if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.”

The investigation is being conducted by the Kane County Investigations Division and the Kane County Evidence Division. County social workers were on the scene, the release said.
