One person had to be rescued from a fire Wednesday that badly damaged six units in a building housing disabled people, according to the Naperville Fire Department.

The blaze was reported by a fire alarm monitoring company about 2 p.m. in the 1100 block of Iroquois Avenue, the report said. As firefighters were en route, the department was notified by the building manager that black smoke was coming from one unit and by several people that residents were trapped on the second floor.

Firefighters rescued one person from a second-floor window and several others were evacuated or moved to other locations, the report said.

No one was injured. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

A sprinkler head that activated in the unit where the fire originated helped keep flames from spreading to other areas, the fire department said. The situation was under control in more than an hour, but the damage resulted in six units being deemed uninhabitable by the city.

Four of the 29 people in residence had to be moved to other parts of the building or placed with family members. Total damage was estimated at about $300,000, the report said.

Naperville police and Lisle-Woodridge Fire District assisted at the scene and backup was provided by the Aurora, Bolingbrook, Oswego, Plainfield, Warrenville, West Chicago and Wheaton fire departments.
