Elgin police officers who dealt with a man who died of an accidental drug overdose in a jail holding cell acted properly and followed procedures, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office said.
Patryk Lankamer, 20, of Roselle, was brought to the police station the night of Jan. 20 to be booked on multiple drug and weapons charges. His arrest and booking was documented by video taken by officer body cameras, squad car cameras and multiple cameras in the Elgin jail, a release said.
Lankamer was found in dead in his cell on Jan. 22, where there were no cameras. An autopsy done by the Kane County Coroner’s Office determined two bags, later found to contain .3 grams of cocaine and 5 grams of fentanyl, were found on his body.
The cause of death was ruled accidental due to cocaine and fentanyl intoxication.
As required by state statute, the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force investigated the incident and State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser reviewed their findings and all evidence obtained, the release said.
“There is no evidence or indication that any Elgin Police Department employee committed an unlawful act or failed to follow any policy or law,” Mosser said in a statement.
“The investigation shows that Elgin police personnel acted within the law and followed department procedure during their investigation, Mr. Lankamer’s arrest, and throughout his stay in the department lockup.”
