One lucky lottery player in California hit it big, winning the massive $1.76 billion Powerball jackpot

Wednesday night.

The winner, who has yet to be identified, broke a monthslong streak without a big payout, matching all six numbers to bag the second-largest lottery prize in history.

Wednesday’s jackpot is the latest in a string of billion-dollar prizes. Just this year, three other jackpots passed the $1 billion mark, a feat that has only happened nine times in history.

Those won this year include a Mega Millions jackpot worth $1.35 billion in January, a $1.08 billion Powerball prize in July and, most recently, a $1.58 billion Mega Millions jackpot in Florida this August that at the time became the third-biggest lottery prize ever won.

With an estimated cash value of $774.1 million, Wednesday’s prize is dwarfed only by one.

The biggest jackpot in U.S. lottery history was a Powerball prize won in California in November 2022, with a record payout worth a whopping $2.04 billion.

Here’s the complete ranking of the top 10 biggest lottery jackpots in U.S. history.
