South Elgin man named outstanding park volunteer

Steve Gordon, of South Elgin, has been named Outstanding Volunteer of the Year by the Illinois Association of Park Districts.

Gordon and his wife, Judy, own and operate the Dairy Queen at 712 N. McLean Blvd. In summer, their store was recognized as the top Dairy Queen in northeastern Illinois by Lurie Children’s Hospital Miracle Network, collecting more than $15,000 in donations for the nonprofit.

Gordon also volunteers his time with the South Elgin Parks & Recreation Department, according to a post on the village’s Facebook page. His involvement has included picking pumpkins for Pumpkin Patch Festival, running concessions at the Tuna Kahuna fishing event, serving food at the Ice Cream for Breakfast Day and calling bingo during movie nights.

Gordon will be honored at the association’s awards gala Oct. 20 at the Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling.
