Four more alebrijes added to Gail Borden collection

Four new alebrijes added to the Alebrijes exhibit at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin.

Osito Emilia (bear), El Kokoro (crocodile), Tochtli (rabbit) and Gigi (bear) have joined the 20 colorful alebrijes already on display, a news release said. The exhibit will be at the main library through Jan. 7.

“Alebrijes” stem from Mexican folklore, embodying characteristics from a variety of animals to create fantastical creatures.

Several programs are being held in conjunction with the exhibit, including a one in which artist Cristina Colunga will teach children how to paint and decorate an alebrije on a T-shirt. The program is set for 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12. Materials other than the shirts will be provided and it will be presented in English and Spanish, a release said.
