Writer doesn’t understand systems

A recent contributor to letters reminded me, once again, that our schools may have been neglecting teaching civics, economics and history.

It was not the first time that a commenter confused a political system (constitutional republic) with an economic system (socialism/communism). Most likely, he could not correctly define either anyway. He also confused the responsibilities of the three levels of government in our federal system. All have specific responsibilities, although the Constitution clearly states that federal laws supersede state and local law.

He may have forgotten that we also fought a Civil War to defend that aspect of the Constitution and made slavery illegal in every state, whether they wanted it or not. He also said that elections don’t matter, that you’ll be disappointed even if your candidate won! Since he thinks elections don’t count, I hope he is not going to vote in any future elections.

Speaker ouster a symptom of problem

Well now that Kevin McCarthy has been ousted as speaker of the House and Donald Trump has a gag order imposed on him because of his bullying ways going after working people in his posts, not to mention facing 91 counts through four indictments, is there truly anyone who feels that the Republicans have any kind of handle on trying to govern in this country?

I can’t believe anyone with any common sense could vote for Republicans, at least on a national level. They’re spending all their time squabbling with each other, throwing little tantrums with the MAGA crowd stomping their feet, that it’s become nothing but a joke with that party. It is a shame since this country truly needs two healthy political parties and we’re down to one.

These are not serious people. They’re only serious about what’s in it for them and could not care less about the people in this country. Trump has been found liable in a sexual assault case, he has admitted to keeping classified documents in his home rather than returning them where they belong. He has insulted and threatened potential jurors, witnesses, judges and the entire judicial system not to mention the FBI and even wants to execute one of our generals all because they won’t play with him nicely.

This man is downright dangerous and, if elected again, God help America. Our only hope is to have him defeated soundly in the next election and even then the man will never admit he loses anything. It’s a frightening time politically and we have one man and one party to thank.
