The city on Wednesday unveiled new artwork to grace O’Hare International Airport’s Terminal 5, the terminal servicing international flights to and from Chicago.

The artwork by more than 20 Chicago artists will have its installation completed this month and was part of a $3.5 million art commission led by Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and the Chicago Department of Aviation. According to the Wednesday announcement, the new collection represents the city’s largest single acquisition of works by Chicago artists in the last 30 years.

“For millions of passengers, Terminal 5 is their first impression of not only Chicago, but our entire country — and there is no better way to showcase the essence, the diversity and the beauty of Chicago than through the arts,” Department of Aviation Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee said in part in the announcement.

There will be an official dedication event with the artists in the coming months.

The new artwork in Terminal 5 joins the large-scale sculpture “REACH” by New York artists Hank Willis Thomas and Coby Kennedy, depicting two arms and hanging in the North Escalator Hall of the O’Hare Multi-Modal Facility, installed last April.
