The League of Women Voters of the La Grange Area is hosting an informative program on carbon capture and storage on Oct. 10.

According to a news release, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a technology that captures carbon dioxide emitted by burning gas, oil, coal, or biomass before it enters the atmosphere and then transports it by pipeline to be stored underground. The recently enacted Inflation and Reduction Act includes incentives for the energy industry to implement CCS projects.

Does the promise live up to the hype? The meeting will begin with a 20-minute video from the 2023 LWVIL Issues Briefing featuring June Sekera, Senior Research Fellow at Boston University, in which she presents extensive data questioning the efficiency of CCS, the release said.

Following the video, a panel of experts, including Emily Grubert, Associate Professor of Sustainable Energy Policy at University of Notre Dame; Rick Knight, Research Coordinator with Citizens’ Climate Education; and Bill Koehl, LWVIL Environmental Issues Specialist, will discuss the viability of Carbon Capture and Storage, the release said. The panel will then answer questions from the audience submitted via Chat.

According to the release, the presentation will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Oct. 10, via Zoom meeting. Advance registration is required using the following link: http://tinyurl.com/LWVLGA-CO2
