La Grange’s CommUNITY Diversity group is inviting residents to participate in a celebration of the Community Mosaic Project.

The group that was founded in the wake of the Rodney King unrest in the early 1990s set aside Oct. 15, as a way to honor those who participated in the project and the Eastside neighborhood.

“CDG initiated the CommUNITY Mosaic Project to bring people together and share stories held by the community,” Marian Honel-Wilson, CDG Board President said in a news release. “It’s been very gratifying to see the outpouring and community engagement and support for this project.”

More than 500 volunteer hours were spent during various meetings laying tiles to create the mural that will fill the east side wall of the Community Center at 200 S. Washington Avenue.

The mural depicts various elements of the history of the Eastside community that is home to so many of La Grange’s African American community.

The celebration of the mural — also sponsored by the Park District of La Grange — will include entertainment by a DJ, live music from the Marjays, break dancing demonstrations, and refreshments provided by community members.

The celebration will run from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Community Center.

Further information on the event, including photos, can be found at CDG’s website, communitydiversity.org.
