Artists win big in Brookfield Zoo photo contest

Worth’s Serena Ghanayem won first place in the bird category, Thornton’s Steven DeYoung took second place in the mammal category and Bolingbrook’s John Sullivan was awarded third place in the bird category in the 2023 Brookfield Zoo 2023 photo contest.

More than 700 images, including those of butterflies, African lions, penguins, primates, peacocks, and snakes, were digitally submitted in this year’s contest. A panel of professional photographers judged the photos.

Area students are resident assistants at Lewis University

The university casts a wide net, searching for the best and brightest individuals from all corners of the world in hopes of creating a vibrant and supportive living community that transcends borders and celebrates cultural diversity.

The new team members bring unique perspectives and a wealth of experiences to the residence halls. The RAs will serve as mentors, friends and leaders, helping residents navigate the exciting journey of college life. They include Chicago’s Justin Lee, New Lenox’s Thomas Juricek and Park Forest’s Somuadina Uwaezuoke.

Lewis University students explore societal solutions

Reducing disease spread in health care settings, firearm safety education and creating more efficient semiconductor manufacturing processes are just a few of the research topics undertaken by Lewis University students this summer, including Homer Glen’s Rebecca Rozhon, Lockport’s Jacob Prince, New Lenox’s Nina Demma, Oak Lawn’s Caitlin Lamirez and Tinley Park’s Anthony DiBenedetto and Austin Rockaitis.

Caroline L. Portlock, director of the Workforce Investment Board of Will County, has been elected as president of the Illinois Workforce Partnership.

“I am both excited and humbled for the opportunity to lead this group of workforce professionals,” Portlock said “As association president I look forward to ensuring that the Illinois Workforce Partnership and our stakeholders have a voice in how the workforce system serves our communities, our residents and our businesses.”

Portlock has served as Will County’s WIB director for seven years.

The IWP advocates for the creation of a skilled workforce to improve the state’s competitiveness and growth. It connects businesses and individuals to resources utilizing public workforce systems. The association is comprised of leaders who strategically engage in a variety of local, regional, state and national partners in workforce and economic development.
