Oak Lawn firefighters recognized for volunteerism
Jeff Goworowski, Nicholas Engel, Michael Felton, Alexander Tessari, Alex Zwick and the Oak Lawn Fire Department recently were recognized for the work and support they provide to the community.
Cecilia Maciel Martinez, the Illinois Upstate Volunteer Programs coordinator, visited the Oak Lawn Fire Department last month to present them with the Governor’s Certificates of Appreciation for their outstanding volunteerism efforts in the community and for demonstrating true leadership by assisting with fundraising efforts for worthy causes.
OLCHS students recognized by College Board

Oak Lawn Community High School students Rizan Ali, Leo Chavez, Frank Echevarria, Yumn Elameer, Victoria Hartin, Andrea Midnight and Leonardo Orbea earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. These programs celebrate students’ hard work in high school and showcase their strong academic performance.
Area students receive KOC scholarships

St. Christina Parish’s Nora Dunn, St. Barnabas Parish’s Anna Herber, Queen of Martyrs Parish’s Frannie Troglia and St. Christina Parish’s Nicholas Wood were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship from Father Perez Knights of Columbus Council 1444.
Dunn received the Sir Knight Ron Hrad Scholarship, Anna Herber was awarded the Knight Tom and RL Malburg Scholarship, Troglia accepted the PGK Sir Knight Matt Stevens Scholarship and Nicholas Wood earned the Christopher Ullrich Scholarship.
They are matriculating from elementary school to Catholic high schools this fall.

Mokena’s Faith Jones and New Lenox’s Miles Hagen conducted research at UW-Whitewater during the last school year through the Undergraduate Research Program.
URP offers a variety of programs aimed to connect students with faculty mentors and provide them with enriching research opportunities.
Jones, who is majoring in social work, presented “The Effects of Religion and Spirituality in Social Work Practice.”
Hagen who is majoring in biology, presented “Characterization and Analysis of the pdk-1 gene in Brugia malayi using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system.” Hagen won the Biology Endowment award for this project.
Alsip’s Crims participates in research program
Alsip’s Payton Crims started his Monmouth College career before his first class at the college.
Crims was one of 23 new students selected to participate in Monmouth’s Summer Opportunities for Intellectual Activities program.
A graduate of Shepard High School and a communication studies major with a prelaw focus at Monmouth, Crims worked on the SOFIA project titled “Monmouth Constitutional Convention.”
Olympia Fields’ Moore-Stone named All-American
Jordan Moore-Stone, a Providence Catholic graduate from Olympia Fields, was among eight Baldwin Wallace men’s rugby student-athletes selected as a National Collegiate Rugby 2022-23 Scholastic All-American.
Moore-Stone, who is majoring in music industry, is part of the selective group of Scholastic All-Americans representing approximately 1 out of 20 student-athletes competing in college rugby.
