A 64-year-old male Highland Park bicyclist was critically injured in eastern Glencoe Aug. 23 after colliding with a delivery truck, according to the village’s public safety department.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of Sheridan Road and South Avenue as the bicyclist was heading northbound on Sheridan Road when he slammed into a Dodge Ram ProMaster.
“The bicyclist was going northbound on Sheridan Road past South Avenue and struck the rear of a stopped Amazon delivery truck,” Glencoe Deputy Public Safety Chief Andrew Perley explained. “He rode directly into the back of the van.”
After being treated by emergency personnel, the bicyclist was transported to Evanston Hospital and was listed in critical condition as of the last report he received, according to Perley. He did not identify the name of the bicyclist.
A law enforcement investigation is ongoing into the incident with Perley noting the extreme heat of that day — as temperatures soared near 100 degrees in the Chicago area — may have been a factor.
Perley added the driver of the van was unloading packages at the time of the incident and is cooperating with the investigation.
An approximate half-mile portion of Sheridan Road from Hawthorn Avenue to Harbor Road was closed for several hours following the incident.
