A former Elgin man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 17 over the course of three years, according to Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Lawrence M. Slack, 65, who now lives in Goodyear, Arizona, was convicted of one count of criminal sexual assault and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse following a bench trial heard by Kane County Judge John A. Barsanti. All three are felony charges.

Prosecutors said the assaults took place at the home where both Slack and the victim lived and occurred between March 2008 and March 2011, the state’s attorney’s office news release said.

“I am grateful that the victim and her family members persevered through the trial process, and I am pleased the defendant has been held accountable for his actions,” Assistant State’s Attorney Tyler Cox said in a statement. “I hope the victim and her family can return to a place of safety now that the defendant has been found guilty.”

Slack, currently free on $20,000 bond, is next scheduled to be in court Oct. 13 for motions and sentencing. Because of the conviction, Slack must register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with state law.
