Steak-n-Egger reopens in Summit after fire

Terry Carr won’t soon forget St. Patrick’s Day 2023. It was the day he got word a kitchen fire had hit the Summit location of the Steak-n-Egger restaurant chain he owns.

Carr, who also is mayor of McCook, took advantage of the downtime while repairs were underway to the kitchen and made some upgrades to the restaurant he’s operated at 5611 S. Archer Road in Summit for the past several years.

“We made it better,” he said Monday, a week after the restaurant reopened. “We have all new equipment from the top to the bottom.”

Besides the newly remodeled kitchen, Steak-n-Egger has a new ceiling and new floor in the front of the restaurant.

But the price tag was an eye-opener, Carr said.

“The cost of the equipment doubled from when we opened seven years ago,” he said. “And the timetable. Instead of six days it took six weeks to get the new equipment. Unbelievable.”

In an effort to keep the staff working while repairs were being made, Carr opened a video gaming cafe at 79th Street and Harlem Avenue in Bridgeview named Lucky Cindy’s after his mother.

He was noncommittal about more locations for the gambling outlet in the future.

“It was our first one,” he said. “We’ll see how it goes.”

Steak-n-Egger operates six other locations in Cicero, McCook, Midlothian and Chicago, and a new restaurant is planned in Justice.

Fratello’s departs Tinley for Mokena

Fratello’s Café and Deli moved recently from its home in Tinley Park to new digs on Wolf Road in Mokena.

The new location is at 19901 S. Wolf Road and its sign facing Wolf is hard to see because of a tree that obscures the view. Parking is available in the rear of the building.

Fratello’s is only offering pickup and delivery at the present time and store hours are limited to 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the week. It’s closed on weekends. Catering is available seven days a week.

According to a Facebook post, the owners decided to move after they were robbed and vandalized in January.

The company was started by Adriano Martino and Marco Caso in 1997 as a catering business. The first Fratello’s opened in Homewood in 2015 and a second location followed in a former Quizno’s and then the Tinley Park location opened in 2017 in a former Submarina sandwich shop. The Homewood locations were closed some time ago.

Overstock rebrands as Bed Bath & Beyond

Overstock has acquired Bed Bath & Beyond and is rebranding with that name.

The company said they will not be reopening any of the stores, but the home products that were available at Overstock will be listed on the new Bed Bath & Beyond website and app.

Overstock accounts, order histories, and saved items will still be available.

BuyBuyBaby and Harmon are not affiliated with the new Bed Bath & Beyond.

All sales are final for Bed Bath & Beyond purchases made prior to August 1, 2023 and are no longer eligible for returns. Purchases made as of August 1, 2023 are eligible for a return within a 30-day window.

The new Bed Bath & Beyond will not honor gift cards that were issued and unused. Gift card balances from preexisting digital and physical gift cards expired under previous Bed Bath & Beyond ownership.

New Bed Bath & Beyond gift cards are in the works and are expected to be ready by the fall.

Only Bed Bath & Beyond coupons sent on or after August 1 will be honored.
