Ninja course highlights improved Frankfort park

The Frankfort Park District will have a ribbon cutting event next week to official open the improved Lincoln Meadow Park in downtown Frankfort. The park now features a Challenger Ninja Warrior Course with a solar powered timing mechanism and new park shelter as well as other amenities and paths connecting them to the existing playground.

The ribbon cutting event is planned from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 25 at the park at Johnson Avenue and Elm Street, near the Old Plank Road Trail. The park improvements were funded by a $400,000 Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity grant.

West Nile virus detected in Will County mosquitoes

Mosquitoes trapped recently in Mokena, Frankfort and Plainfield tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Will County Health Department’s Environmental Health division.

The results represent the first West Nile positive mosquitoes identified in Will County this year. No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported so far this year.

Area breweries offer Goat Queen Feast, Makers Market

Two area breweries are preparing for an interesting weekend ahead as Rabid Brewing in Homewood hosts its Feast of the Goat Queen festival Saturday and Hailstorm Brewing in Tinley Park returns its Flurry of Makers Market on Sunday.

The Feast of the Goat Queen, from 2 to 11:30 p.m. at Rabid, 17759 Bretz Drive, Homewood, celebrates “Floralia,” according to organizers, “with fae costumes, new beers, live goats, live music, food vendors, exotic entertainment, and an artisan market of the natural, mystical and magical.”

Besides new beers and slushies on tap, the event features an artisan fair, baby goats, food vendors and entertainment including a wandering wizard, burlesque and feats of strength performances, music from The Land Before Tim and an appearance by Chicago Knockouts Roller Derby.

The Flurry of Makers Market is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hailstorm, 8060 186th St., Tinley Park. More than two dozen artists, including a Henna Tattoo artist, a caricature artist and a tarot reader, highlight a “sip and shop” event that will include food from Scratch Made Kitchen.

Pet treat sale raises funds for Alzheimer’s fight

Residents at Porter Place, an Anthem Memory Care community in Tinley Park, are inviting everyone to spoil their pets while supporting the fight against Alzheimer’s disease as the sell fresh baked dog and cat treats to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

The residents will also sell treats for people, including cookies, brownies and cake. The sale runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 24-30 at Porter Place, 17833 Harlem Ave.

“Many of our seniors are lifelong animal lovers and being a part of this fundraiser makes them feel productive,” said Jennifer Boonstra, life engagement director for Porter Place. “This gives them a chance to continue to make a difference to others.”

Artists sought for Friday Night Lights in Lansing

Planners of the Friday Night Lights series at Fox Pointe in Lansing want to close out the inaugural year of the concert series with a special event, so the The village is calling for professional artists to join the event to display and sell their works at the first Friday Night Lights Art Show on Aug. 25.

“We hope to make this last ticketed concert extra special with both music and visual experiences,” said Donna Stuckert, Lansing’s director of communications.

Freedom Trail hike launches Aug. 5

Experts from the Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project will Hike the Freedom Trail on from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 5, presenting the “fascinating and historically accurate story of the hundreds, perhaps thousands, of escaped slaves called Freedom Seekers who traveled the Underground Railroad through the south Chicago region seeking freedom in the north prior to the U.S. Civil War,” according to organizers.

Hikers will meet at the Beaubien Woods Boat Launch, 134th Street at the Little Calumet River. Led by Larry McClellan and Tom Shepherd, the program is co-sponsored by the Forest Preserves of Cook County and the Calumet Heritage Project. The tour will be partly by bus, but will include moderate hiking as well.
