Annual Rotary Ride set for Aug. 13 at Commissioners Park
Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise’s 26th Annual Rotary Ride will be held Sunday, Aug. 13, beginning and ending at Commissioners Park, 3704 111th St. Naperville.
A recreational ride for beginners and experienced cyclists, the event offers 21-, 41- and 62- mile routes that riders will start between 6:30 and 10 a.m., a news release said. Helmets are required for all riders.
Registration costs $40 per if made by July 31. It increases to $50 beginning Aug. 1, the release said.
Kids and families can participate in the 1.4 Family Fun Loop by walking, running or riding anything with nonmotorized wheels. The cost is $15 per family.
Proceeds benefit Sunrise Rotary’s youth and family initiatives locally and internationally.
All routes will have rest stops that are fully staffed with food and drinks, and the ride will take place rain or shine, the release said.

Two more National Merit Scholarship winners announced
Two Naperville residents are the recipients of college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships awarded in the final round of scholarship winners announced by the nonprofit organization.
They are Riona O’Grady, a graduate of Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, who plans to studey biology at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and Zachary Mason Wu, a Naperville North High School graduate who plans to study law at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the school financing the scholarship, a news release said.
More than 7,140 students were the recipients of National Merit Scholarships in 2023.

Work begins on major renovation of DuPage Care Center
DuPage County officials this week celebrated the start of a major interior renovation of the DuPage Care Center, the first remodeling done at the Wheaton facility in more than 30 years.
The wall-breaking event was held in the center’s North Wing, which will be the first section to undergo construction, a news release said. The 80,000-square-foot wing has 128 resident rooms that will be updated at a cost of $11.3 million.
Work should be complete by July 2025.

It is the first phase in a $31.5 million project in which all resident rooms, nurse stations, common area, and main entrance and lobby will undergo renovation, the release said.
The Kenneth Moy DuPage Care Center was originally built in 1888 as a county alms house and became a nursing facility in the 1930s, the release said. Now home to more than 300 residents receiving sub-acute skilled care, long-term custodial care and Alzheimer’s special care, the facility has gone through major expansions in 1964, 1979, and 1991.
Kids who finish book club challenge win gift card for treat
State Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, has launched a Summer Book Club for young readers in the 42nd Senate District over the school break.
To participate, students must read eight books of their choice during the summer break, record the names of the books on a form and return the form to Holmes’ office by Aug. 18, a news release said.
Each student who completes the challenge will receive a gift card for a sweet treat.

Naperville police receive State Police enforcement grant
The Naperville Police Department has been awarded a $27,895 Illinois State Police grant to conduct Firearm Owner’s ID Card revocation or suspection enforcement operations.
Enforcement details focus on people who have are the subject of a firearm restraining order, represent a clear and present danger, or received a criminal conviction but have not complied with state rules in regard to their weapons, a news release said.
This is the second round of enforcement grants awarded this year.
Neighboring Aurora Police Department received a similar grant for $37,501, the release said.
