A Chicago man who tried to rob a delivery truck driver at a Naperville Jewel store by threatening him with a 9mm semi-automatic rifle has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
The term was handed down Thursday by DuPage County Judge Mia McPherson, who found Frederick Holmon, 33, guilty of the July 27, 2021, attempted robbery, a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said.
Holman approached the beverage delivery truck driver, who was unloading pallets at the rear of the 1759 W. Ogden Ave. store, displayed his weapon and demanded the victim hand over his property with the threat, “It’s not worth your life,” the release said.
The driver refused to comply and instead ran towards a Jewel employee, yelling, “the guy’s got a gun.” Holmon fled to a Chevy Suburban parked in a nearby strip mall and drove eastbound on Aurora Avenue, the release said.
Naperville police stopped him a few minutes later in the area of Brookdale and Manchester roads. Officers searching the Suburban found the 9mm semi-automatic rifle, a 9mm extended magazine with sixteen rounds and a .357 loaded revolver with six rounds, the release said.
Holmon was convicted in a bench trial of two counts of armed violence, two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and one count each of attempted armed robbery with a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition by a felon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. All of the charges are felonies.
Holman has been held in the DuPage County jail in lieu of $750,000 bail since his arrest.

“In a brazen, early morning attempt robbery with a 9 mm semi-automatic rifle, Mr. Holman approached his victim, who was just trying to make an honest living, and threatened his life,” Berlin said. “Mr. Holmon’s complete lack of respect for the law and startling disregard for human life is appalling.”
