The Batavia fireworks show that was abruptly canceled on the Fourth of July has been rescheduled for a new date in August, officials said.

The new show will be held at 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, Susan Stark of the private Batavia Fireworks Committee said.

More than 3,000 people were in attendance for the planned fireworks show earlier this month in Batavia when the fireworks vendor Pyrotecnico’s computer failed.

With the theme from “Top Gun” playing, people were waiting for the fireworks to start, and then nothing, Stark said. The vendor then tried to use a backup computer system and that also didn’t work.

Stark said the committee which organizes the fireworks was devastated. The show is paid for by donations.

In a letter to the fireworks committee, Pyrotecnico officials apologized for the glitch that caused both the primary and secondary computer panels to fail.

“At this point in time we have been able to replicate the problem and are working through solutions to prevent this from happening again in the future,” Pyrotecnico Fireworks Executive Vice President Chris Liberatore wrote in the letter to the committee dated July 6.

Pyrotecnico also offered to help support the cost of other services needed to hold the rescheduled event, like portable restrooms and audio equipment.

For the new event, the fireworks will start 30 minutes earlier than the planned July 4 show because the daylight hours are getting shorter, Stark said.

Observation areas for the show are at Engstrom Park on Main Street at Millview Drive and the Batavia High School athletic practice fields between Main Street and West Wilson Street.

Food trucks will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. for the fireworks at Engstrom Park.

On the committee’s website, organizers wrote: “Thank you so much for sticking with us. It was uncomfortable and mortifying for the committee. A year’s worth of planning and it did not go up in smoke.”
