A Naperville police call about a man allegedly pushing a woman into a car led to a felon’s arrest for illegally having a handgun, according to DuPage County charges.
Bail was set at $1 million Friday for Terrell Maclin-Dupree, 25, of the 3700 block of West Grenshaw Street, Chicago, following his arrest on charges of being an armed habitual criminal and unlawful use of a weapon-prior conviction. Both are felonies, with the former a class X count.
Maclin-Dupree is currently on probation for two separate aggravated unlawful use of a weapon cases in Cook County, the state’s attorney’s office and the Naperville Police Department said.
Police officers who answered the call about the shoving incident at the 7-Eleven store, 1663 N. Route 59, said they smelled cannabis coming from the car, the report said. When Maclin-Dupree exited the car, he threw a satchel into the back seat, which police found contained baggies of cannabis and a .22-caliber gun with three live rounds and a spent casing.
He also allegedly was in possession of cannabis when searched, officials said.
It was the second case in a week in which charges were filed against someone who was in illegal possession of a gun, State’s Attorney Robert Berlin noted in the account.
Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres said he believes every illegal gun they confiscate has an effect on future crime.
“Illegal weapons have no place in our community, and I have no doubt our officers are preventing violent crimes here or elsewhere by taking them off the streets,” Arres said in the report.
Maclin-Dupree’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 4.
