Palestinian restaurant opens in Palos Heights

Palos Heights has a new restaurant that is adding Middle Eastern cuisine to the city’s culinary palate.

Shawarma Bros opened earlier this year at the corner of 127th Street and Harlem Avenue in the former Manhattan Firehouse Grill and before that Nick’s BBQ.

Shawarma Bros is serving Palestinian foods including falafel, hummus, and, of course, shawarma. There are appetizers and desserts, as well. Shawarma is very similar to gyros. It is seasoned meat roasted on a turning spit and sliced thin for use in sandwiches, wraps, pitas and bowls.

Shawarma Bros offer a variety of shawarma meats including steak, chicken, butter chicken, and spicy chicken. Many dishes are served with Arabic pickles and garlic sauce.

Most of the food is prepared fresh daily in-house.

The restaurant, 12658 S. Harlem Ave., is owned by Faruk Masoud and two family members. It has a drive-through and offers dine-in as well as catering. Hours are 10 a.m. to midnight daily.

Krazy Hog BBQ opens in Matteson

A new barbecue joint is now open in Matteson.

Krazy Hog BBQ opened last month and held its official ribbon cutting July 4 at 4433 W. 211th St. in Matteson as a tribute to its original pitmaster, the Rev. Donald Meeks, who died a year ago.

Krazy Hog serves Southern-style barbecue. The menu includes baby back ribs, rib tips, pulled pork, wings, hot links and leg quarters. There’s an assortment of sauces available. Sides include fries, corn on the cob, slaw, baked beans, mac and cheese and fries.

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It is closed on Sundays.

Webb Chevy BBQ to aid USO

Webb Chevy of Oak Lawn will hold its 10th annual USO BBQ for the Troops from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, at the dealership, 9440 S. Cicero Ave. in Oak Lawn.

There will be food, drinks and entertainment.

All proceeds collected will go directly to the USO of Illinois.

The event is sponsored by the Chicago Automobile Trade Association to raise awareness and funds for local military and their families.

Webb set a goal of $5,000, which has already been surpassed as the dealership has so far raised $6,525. That is the most of any participating new car dealership. Donations are also being collected at Webb Chevy Oak Lawn on Facebook.

Wolf Road road work reconfiguration planned

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced last week that, weather permitting, northbound Wolf Road was to reopen July 6, but southbound Wolf Road will close between 179th Street and U.S. Route 6.

The new configuration is expected to remain in place through early September.

A detour will direct motorists to U.S. 6 and 179th Street. Access to residences and businesses within the work zone will be maintained throughout construction.

This is phase two of the $2 million project, which consists of resurfacing 1.2 miles of Wolf Road, constructing new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps and culvert repairs. The project is expected to be completed in late fall.
