Graduation celebration lacks achievement

We have been invited to a young relative’s eighth grade graduation party. She persevered through COVID-19 school mandates, earned excellent grades and was a dedicated swim team member at her suburban school.

In a recent Southtown, we saw a photo of a Chicago Public Schools graduate. The companion story said he’d attended school for just four weeks, after arrival from South America. It revealed such students are allowed to graduate despite probable lack of “health, immunization or school records; proof of guardianship, proof of residency, or other documents normally required for school enrollment.”

Ald. Michael Rodriguez explained that, counting these migrants, the higher enrollment could ensure more funding for neighborhood schools.

One wonders: which student moves forward with a sense of achievement — the one who earned her coveted cap and gown or the one who received them to attend a ceremony where he and his mother took a photo?

Ted Slowik column will be missed

I am writing to tell you — and him — how sorry I am to see that Ted Slowik is leaving the paper. His column was the one thing I read every day!

Righties seek return to Dark Ages

White evangelicals are true domestic terrorists. Eighty percent of them voted for Trump twice! Most of those people still support him.

Their other option is Ron DeSantis, a man who is against diversity, equity and inclusion. Think about those three words for just a minute. Various groups have been fighting “for” those very things for thousands of years, and he steadfastly forbids them. Politically, the word “woke” means to be informed, educated and conscious of social injustice and racial inequality. Yet DeSantis wants to ban it. Seriously?

You’ve got to feel sorry for Christian conservatives, not! Given the current Republican candidates, Chris Christie is too moderate to win their nomination, and yet he’s the only one who would have a realistic chance of beating Biden.

Righties have lost the popular vote in seven of the past eight presidential elections. Until they accept how archaic and out of touch their ancient ideals are, they will continue failing. They despise change. They want to return to the Dark Ages. Sorry folks, but progress evolves with or without you. As Martin Luther King once said, the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.
