A 22-month-old child who was seriously injured during a vehicle crash in Aurora Saturday afternoon is now in stable condition, according to officials from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said the child was playing near a house on the 1900 block of Liberty Street and took off running around 1:21 p.m. and ran into the roadway. Meanwhile, a 2008 Ford was driving westbound on Liberty Street and struck the child, officials said.

Witnesses told officers the vehicle was not speeding and the driver tried to avoid the child but was unsuccessful, officials said.

The child was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora and then flown to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago in critical condition, according to officials. As of Sunday, the child was listed in stable condition. Police said the extent of the child’s injuries has not been reported to police by hospital staff.

As of now, no citations have been issued. The Kane County Evidence Division is processing the vehicle for any other information based on the circumstances of the incident, officials said.
