An early morning fire caused more than $1 million in damage to a home on Naperville’s east side, fire officials said.

The blaze started in an attached garage and had spread to the house by the time firefighters arrived about 12:30 a.m. Friday to the 900 block of Julian Court, near Gartner Road and South Washington Street, a Naperville Fire Department news release said.

Because of the heavy volume of fire, which caused the roof to collapse, firefighters were forced to switch to a defensive operation to prevent flames from spreading to neighboring properties, the release said. It took about two hours to get the blaze under control and another three hours to ensure all hotspots had been extinguished.

The house’s residents were not at home at the time of the fire; the structure was deemed uninhabitable by city officials. No injuries were reported.

Investigators are working to determine how the fire started, the release said.
