The Hinsdale Police Department has announced an increase in traffic enforcement, focused on enforcing impaired and unbuckled drivers, over the two weeks leading up to Independence Day.

The campaign, which is part of the wider National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving awareness campaign, will run between June 16 to the morning of July 5.

Hinsdale joins more than 200 police and sheriff’s departments in Illinois participating in the campaign.

“It’s simple: If you’re driving, don’t drink, use marijuana or other drugs,” Deputy Chief Thomas Lillie said in the release. “Our officers will be working around the clock to keep impaired drivers off the roads and enforce all other traffic laws.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,460 drivers have been killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes over the Fourth of July holiday period between 2017-2021, an average of 292 fatalities a year.
