Sandburg and Stagg students medal on National French Exam

Four Sandburg students and three from Stagg ranked nationally in the 88th annual Le Grand Concours, or National French Contest.

These students included Sandburg junior Gabriella Virgen (Level 2 Gold), freshman Xavier Fellman (Level 2 Silver), sophomore Lily DeFrates (Level 2 Bronze) and junior Nicole Nesterovitch (Level 3 Silver); and Stagg seniors Michelle Martinez-Dominguez (Level 4 Bronze) and Eva Goldman (Level 3 Silver) and sophomore Niko Kounavis (Level 2 Silver).

Moraine Valley student writers earn 20 state awards

Moraine Valley Community College journalism students and those associated with the college student newspaper, The Glacier, won 20 awards from the Illinois Community College Journalism Association, including News Story of the Year, Arts Review, Headline, Sports Game Story, Sports Feature, Staff Editorial, Feature Writing, Best Individual News Story and Editorial Cartoon.

For the second consecutive year, The Glacier was named Best Student Media in Illinois and won the Mike Foster General Excellence Award for its website.

The News Story of the Year was for a series of articles on the war in Ukraine with a local angle, written by editor-in-chief Nick Stulga, of Tinley Park, and Mariah Trujillo, an alumna who was a Moraine Valley student a year ago when the articles were written. Since many of the awards were given out for work completed in 2022, several students have graduated and transferred out.

Alums who received awards included Omar Shalabi (first place Feature Writing and News Story), Connor Dore (second place Podcast), Sarah Schudt (third place Graphics), Kirsten Duffy, (third place Sports Game Story) and Mike Pocza (third place Sports Feature).

Current students who received awards included Stulga (first place Arts Review, Sports Game Story, Headline; second place Reporter of the Year), Evergreen Park’s Rosie Finnegan (first place Staff Editorial; second place Editorial Writer of the Year), Palos Hills’ Mohammed Jbara (first place Sports Feature; third place Sports column) Orland Park’s Malak Alomari (first place Editorial Cartoon) and Mokena’s Aidan McGuire (second place Feature Photo and News Photo).

University Park’s Lewis hosts at Hofstra conference

University Park’s Donay Lewis served as a student host in April during Hofstra University’s 13th presidential conference, “The Barack Obama Presidency: Hope and Change.”

Lockport’s Henson and Manhattan’s Holcomb praised by Millikin

Lockport’s Hannah Henson received the Robert and Barbara Byrkit Award in Education and Manhattan’s Jupiter Holcomb received the Dorothy Sellers Art Award during Millikin University’s annual Honors Convocation and Distinguished Faculty Lecture on April 27.
