An Oswego man has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with a crash in Sugar Grove that killed one of the passengers in his car Monday.

Julio DeAnda-Vargas, 29, was driving a Hyundai Genesis around 3:50 p.m. Monday northbound on Ashe Road when he lost control of the vehicle on the last curve before Jericho Road, Kane County Sheriff’s officials said in a press release.

The vehicle left the roadway, striking a utility pole which sheared off the front and rear passenger side doors of the car, officials said.

The front seat passenger received severe but non-life-threatening injuries while a passenger in the back seat, Ma Cristina Cortes, 58, of Aurora, was killed in the collision, officials said.

DeAnda-Vargas is currently being held at the Kane County jail and is awaiting bond call.
