As part of National Nurses Week earlier this month, several local elected officials joined in honoring nurses who serve in their respective communities.

According to a news release from Advocate Health, state Sen. Dan McConchie, R-Lake Zurich, was among officials and their teams who greeted nurses at area hospitals, offering them flowers and other honoraria. McConchie visited Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

“Nurses are essential to our healthcare system and deserve every ounce of gratitude and praise,” McConchie said in the release. “I am so grateful for the nurses I’ve encountered over the years during some very challenging times.”

The elected state leader called nurses’ work a “tough job both physically and emotionally” as he said the acknowledgement was “the least we can do” to thank such hard-working and selfless” professionals.

“We celebrate our nurses … for the dedication, skill and excellence they demonstrate throughout the year,” said Roseanne Niese, chief nursing officer at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

She expressed gratitude to the legislators who recognized the nurses.

“[For National Nurses Week] we honor our nursing professionals and offer our gratitude for the many ways – big and small – that they make a difference each and every day,” said Mary Roesch, chief nursing officer at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.  “It’s so important to have our community recognize the impact of our incredible nursing team and their tireless efforts to help all people live well.”

State Senate Republican Leader John Curran, of Downers Grove, and state Sen. Don DeWitte, R-St. Charles, also visited Advocate hospitals in their respective districts, the release states.

According to the release, Advocate has more than 9,000 nurses and eight Magnet-designated hospitals, an industry benchmark for excellence in nursing.
